Youth Golf: Sean Miller claims Rockford Boy's Classic title

ROCKFORD ? Sean Miller prefers faster greens but didn?t pass up the opportunity to compete at this week?s Greater Rockford Boy?s Classic at Ingersoll Golf Course.

The East junior fired back-to-back 71s on the course to claim the classic crown and he also finished first in the 17-18 age class.

?Just for the experience, I figured I might as well play it,? Miller said. ?It?s a slower green where you don?t need power to win at this course, but you need to be accurate. I can?t say I was accurate. I was all over the place, but I can say my short game was working and I putted a few putts.?

Miller, a NIC-10 all-conference selection, said the title meant a lot to him as he hopes to return to the state level like he did as a freshman.

?It builds some confidence going into the school season,? he said.

Tyler Gilliam, the closest to the pin winner, finished second in the 17-18 age class with a 149 (74-75) in the field of 15.

Boylan sophomore Kyle Slattery won the 15-16 age group title with a 146 (73-73). John Milner was second at 148 (73-75).

?There was a lot pressure at the beginning, but I had to keep it together and play like it was the first day,? Slattery said. ?The greens held more today. Yesterday, they were bouncing all over the place and it was hard to judge what club to hit with. Today, I felt it was a lot better playing conditions.?

Grant Germano won the 13-14 age class with a 145. He shot the lowest 18-hole round with a 70.

?I?m happy to shoot a 70 today,? said Germano, whose overall score placed him second behind Miller.

In the nine-hole division, Marcus James Smith won the 11-12 age group with a 78, while Addison Raimer won the 8-10 division with a 90. Benjamin Gibbons claimed the 5-7 title in the four-hole division with a 37.

The event had 86 registered boys in the competition.
