Market Drayton accident victim trains pet to be assistance dog ...

A Shropshire dog is proving to be a woman?s best friend by helping to improve her life after a devastating accident.

Caroline Lewis, from Market Drayton, has been confined to a wheelchair since a car accident in 1998. Now she is training her pet dog Sera to be an assistance dog to help with her disability.

Ms Lewis is being supported by training firm Dog A.I.D after her previous dog, Jade, died.

She said: ?I simply can?t put into words the impact having an assistance dog, especially one self-trained, has had on my life. It?s an exceptionally special relationship and one made all the more so when that dog comes into your life as a pet but quickly becomes your helper.

?Once trained Sera will be able to help me with tasks such as picking up dropped items, turning on light switches with her paw or nose, opening doors and so much more.?

Dog A.I.D. was established in Cannock the 1990s to help owners train their pets to become assistance dogs. Training normally takes place over an 18-month period with experts based around the country on hand to help.

Sandra Fraser, chairman of trustees at Dog A.I.D. said: ?Caroline worked incredibly hard to train Jade and we are confident she will do exactly the same with Sera. It is fantastic to empower people with disabilities to train their own pet dogs to become helpers for them.

?It not only increases confidence but delivers such a feeling of independence when you are reliant on your four-legged friend, rather than always having to ask another person to pick things up for you, open doors and so much more. Dog A.I.D. is a small charity hoping to grow through the support of volunteers and fundraisers.?
