Sham 9/11 Charity Is Ordered to Repay Donations - Philanthropy ...

New Jersey officials have reached a settlement with two men accused of soliciting contributions to a phony charity claiming to help the families of police and firefighters who died in the Sept. 11, 2001 World Trade Center attacks, The Star Ledger reports. Mark Anthony Niemczyk, 66, of Tinton Falls, N.J., and Thomas Scalgione, 40, of Stafford, N.J., agreed to pay $121,116 to the state, which will distribute the money to legitimate 9/11 organizations.

According to a July 2011 state lawsuit, the two men turned up at public events in a pickup truck with painted images of the Twin Towers and lists of the names of first responders who died on Sept. 11 and sold T-shirts with New York City police and fire department logos. Investigators determined that none of the money went to victims? families.
