Before the Job Fair

  • Check the BRIDGES ERC web site frequently for a list of companies participating in the job fair.
  • Make a list of the top five or ten companies attending that you would like to work for.
  • Go online and research those companies and their current openings. Learn all you can about each company and how your skills match the company?s needs.
  • Write a tailored cover letter and resume for each company attending the job fair that you would like to work for. Put your cover letter and resume into an envelope and hand deliver them to the appropriate company representative.
  • Many companies attending the job fair will not accept resumes so preparing a networking business card will also be necessary. Networking cards are approximately the same size and shape of business cards but a networking card focuses on the job opening you seek and your top selling points for that position. Be sure to include all your pertinent contact information, including your name, phone number, email address, postal mail address.
  • Prepare your 30-second commercial for each company tailoring it to each company?s individual needs the same as you do for a resume and networking card.

Things to Do While at the Job Fair

  • Personal appearance and neatness is very important. Dress as you would for an interview. You are being evaluated by recruiters from the first hello.
  • Get a list of employers attending the job fair and develop a strategy to ensure you are able to meet all the employers on your list.
  • Approach the employers you have previously researched. Introduce yourself, hand them the cover letter and resume you have prepared for them and use your company specific 30 second commercial to tell them about yourself. If they are not allowed to accept your resume, hand them your networking card.
  • Thank the employer for taking the time to talk with you.
  • Collect the employer?s literature and business cards for follow up.
  • Stay focused when you attend job fairs to be sure you get what you want out of them. Don?t be distracted by other people you may run into at the job fair that aren?t in a position to help you get a job.

After the Job Fair

  • Immediately take the time to organize the information and business cards you have collected. Make notes so you can remember what you discussed with each recruiter.
  • Follow up within one or two days with a personalized note to recruiters and organizations you visited. Thank the recruiter for his/her time and reiterate your interest in the position and company.
