Q&A: Actress Greta Gerwig on Italy - Carry On | Travel + Leisure

08.30.12

Greta Gerwig

The former queen of mumblecore movies, Greta Gerwig, is now starring in such high-profile projects as Woody Allen?s To Rome with Love (out now). Here, her thoughts on truffles, art, and other Italian greats.

Q: Where did you stay while filming?
A: The cast stayed at the Parco dei Principi ($$$),near the far side of Villa Borghese. It was very fancy, but old-school, like seventies-style, which makes sense given Woody Allen. It was definitely built when you wanted to use as much chrome as you could get.

Q: In a city full of famous locations, did you have a favorite?
A: We shot a scene at night in Campo de? Fiori, a glorious square with a fountain. It was just magical.

Q: And the food?
A: Sometimes I would walk 40 minutes to Ciampini to have gelato for breakfast. It?s like eating butter with ice cream. And I?d never really had truffles before?? I ate a disgusting amount of them. I would order two pastas at dinner, which is why I?m a little chubby in the film.

Q: Did you take any side trips?
A: Florence. I?d never seen Michelangelo?s David, which made me cry. It?s so iconic that you don?t expect to have a reaction to it. But you see it and it?s so human. It completely floored me.

Q: Woody Allen seems to be working his way through Europe. Where would you like him to film next?
A: I?d love to see what he?d do in a movie about Berlin. That would produce great comedy. I watched Bananas again recently and I think he does well in places with less romance. Just imagine: To Berlin with Love from Woody Allen.

U.S. Lawns Prepares for Snow & Ice Storms in ... - Franchising.com

August 31, 2012 // Franchising.com // ORLANDO, FL ? With daytime temperatures in the 90?s and nighttime temperatures in the 70?s, US. Lawns is ready for snow & ice.

Orlando is an unlikely place and the dead of summer is an unlikely time to make preparations for snow and ice, but that is exactly what U.S. Lawns does. That is in part how this semi-tropics-based company ranked #8 on Snow Magazine?s TOP 100 snow contractors list for 2012.

?We have to monitor very closely the expectations of our customers in the snow regions, and when a snow or ice event strikes, we have to be ready,? said Ken Hutcheson, President of U.S. Lawns. ?We have manned and automated systems in place to react and track progress for multiple locations simultaneously nationwide, with great results.?

U.S. Lawns is a full service, year-round commercial landscape management company with 250 offices nationwide. Their commercial contracts allow them time to prepare for the winter.

?We stay close to our customers,? said Ken Hutcheson. ?Part of our culture, which started in 1986, has always included building relationships with our customers and maintaining open communication with them. That becomes critical when there is a snow or ice storm. Those events are minute to minute. We have to react quickly to make sure our customers? properties are ready and accessible for their customers during business hours. No one wants to arrive at a bank or business that has not been cleared of snow by the time they are ready to conduct business. We have a team in place to ensure our customers? needs are met.?

About U.S. Lawns

Founded in 1986, U.S. Lawns services commercial landscape customers through a network of over 250 locally owned franchise locations nationwide, providing customized commercial landscape management and snow & ice management services to corporate campuses, retail centers, industrial parks, multi-family residential communities and other commercial customers. Good communication is critical: Center for Written, Oral and Visual ...

This week marked the opening of Rice University?s Center for Written, Oral and Visual Communication (CWOVC), a key part of the new Program in Writing and Communications that the Faculty Senate approved last November. The bright, glassed-in center is located on the second-floor mezzanine of Fondren Library, and its writing and communication skill-enhancing services are now available to all Rice students, from freshmen to Ph.D. candidates, as well as postdocs and visiting scholars.

The goal of the center is to help make students? written, verbal and visual communications ? from simple papers to PowerPoint presentations to doctoral dissertations and conference proposals ? clear, well-structured and persuasive. All are critical skills in a world where the effective presentation of information and ideas matters. The plan approved by the Senate also revised the graduation requirements so that all first-year students must take a discipline-based writing-intensive seminar.

Jennifer Shade Wilson

The center?s opening also marks a homecoming for new director Jennifer Shade Wilson, who graduated from Rice in 1993 with a bachelor?s degree in English.

Wilson is passionate about the center?s mission. ?We think of our services as a coaching or feedback session,? she said. ?We?re not a fix-it shop. We will talk about a particular text that a student brings in and about how he or she could better communicate ideas.?

Wilson served in Rice?s admissions office from 1995 to 2002 and rose to the position of associate director of admission. She earned her master?s degree in applied English linguistics at the University of Houston in 2004, after which she served as assistant director of the University of Houston Writing Center, where she supervised its English as a Second Language (ESL) writing and other programs. Recently, Wilson completed her doctorate in second language education at the University of Toronto, where she also worked as a teaching assistant and taught writing and speaking courses to international graduate students.

Wilson hasn?t had much time to process her feelings about her homecoming but said she is excited by the opportunity to lead the center. ?It?s really fulfilling professionally because, as a former student and based on my work at other centers, I know how much Rice students will be able to benefit from a program and center like ours,? she said.

In addition to individual sessions, the center plans to offer workshops on oral presentation and visual and multimedia communication technologies for undergraduates, graduate students and faculty.

The center?s staff includes program coordinator Shar?-Lin Anderson and associate directors Elizabeth Festa and Kyung-Hee Bae, who have broad experience in working with ESL students, teaching with technology and analyzing visual rhetoric and design. They supervise nearly 60 undergraduate and graduate student communications consultants who are available to engage with students in one-on-one or group settings. Informal consultations can take place in the center?s main area or in one of the presentation technology-equipped ?smart? rooms.

Students interested in the center?s services are welcome to schedule 40-minute appointments via the website, http://cwovc.rice.edu. The center is open seven days a week and consultations may be scheduled between 8 a.m. and midnight.

Weakening Isaac hovers over water-logged Louisiana

NEW ORLEANS (AP) ? Isaac hovered over Louisiana for a third day Thursday, shedding more than a foot of additional rain that forced authorities to hurriedly evacuate areas ahead of the storm and rescue hundreds of people who could not escape as the rapidly rising waters swallowed entire neighborhoods.

The huge spiral weather system weakened to a tropical depression as it crawled inland, but it caught many places off guard by following a meandering, unpredictable path. The storm's excruciatingly slow movement meant that Isaac practically parked over low-lying towns and threw off great sheets of water for hours.

"I was blindsided. Nobody expected this," said Richard Musatchia, who fled his water-filled home in LaPlace, northwest of New Orleans.

Inside the fortified levees that protected New Orleans, bursts of sunshine streamed through the thick clouds, and life began to return to normal. But beyond the city, people got their first good look at Isaac's damage: Hundreds of homes were underwater. Half the state was without power at the one point. Thousands were staying at shelters.

And the damage may not be done. Even more rain was expected in Louisiana before the storm finally drifts into Arkansas and Missouri.

Isaac dumped as much as 16 inches in some areas, and about 500 people had to be rescued by boat or high-water vehicles. At least two deaths were reported.

Five feet of water poured into Musatchia's home before a neighbor passed by with a boat and evacuated him and his 6-year-old boxer, Renny.

He piled two suitcases, a backpack and a few smaller bags onto the boat and said that was all he had left. He abandoned a brand-new Cadillac and a Harley-Davidson.

"People have their generators, because they thought the power would go out, but no one expected" so much water, Musatchia said.

Other evacuees were picked up by National Guard vehicles, school buses and pickup trucks.

Daphine and David Newman fled their newly decorated home with two trash bags of clothing. They have lived in their subdivision since 1992 and never had water in their home from previous storms, not even Hurricane Katrina.

The comparison was common since Isaac hit on the seventh anniversary of the devastating 2005 storm, though the differences were stark.

Katrina was more powerful, coming ashore as a Category 3 storm. Isaac was a Category 1 at its peak. Katrina barreled into the state and quickly moved through. Isaac creeped across the landscape at less than 10 mph and wobbled constantly.

David Newman was frustrated that the government spent billions of dollars reinforcing New Orleans levees after Katrina, only to see the water inundating surrounding regions.

"The water's got to go somewhere," he said. "It's going to find the weakest link."

The sudden call for evacuations so long after the storm made landfall provoked a debate about whether anyone was to blame.

Jefferson Parish Council President Chris Roberts said forecasters at the National Hurricane Center in Miami needed a new way of measuring the danger that goes beyond wind speed.

"The risk that a public official has is, people say, 'Aw, it's a Category 1 storm, and you guys are out there calling for mandatory evacuations,'" Roberts said.

Hundreds of people in lower Jefferson chose to ride out the storm ? and many of them had to be rescued, he said.

Eric Blake, a specialist at the hurricane center, said that although Isaac's cone shifted west as it zigzagged toward the Gulf Coast, forecasters accurately predicted its path, intensity and rainfall. He did say the storm came ashore somewhat slower than anticipated.

Blake cautioned against using Katrina as a benchmark for flooding during other storms.

"Every hurricane is different," Blake said. "If you're trying to use the last hurricane to gauge your storm surge risk, it's very dangerous."

Along the shores of Lake Ponchartrain near New Orleans, officials sent scores of buses and dozens of high-water vehicles to help evacuate about 3,000 people as floodwaters lapped against houses and stranded cars.

The water rose waist-high in some neighborhoods, and the Louisiana National Guard worked with sheriff's deputies to rescue people stuck in their homes.

In LaPlace, a Coast Guard helicopter plucked a couple and their dogs from a home after storm surge gushed into their neighborhood and washed many houses away.

"They used a flashlight inside the house as a signaling device, which made all the difference in locating them effectively," Lt. Cmdr. Jorge Porto said.

Crews intentionally breached a levee that was strained by Isaac's floodwaters in southeast Louisiana's Plaquemines Parish, which is outside the federal levee system. At the same time, water at a dam farther north in Mississippi was released in an effort to prevent flooding there.

Since the storm arrived in the U.S., the first two fatalities were a tow truck driver hit by a tree that fell on his vehicle in Picayune, Miss., and a man who fell from a tree while helping friends move a vehicle. Deputies did not know why he climbed the tree.

Although New Orleans' bigger, stronger levee system easily handled the deluge from Isaac, rural areas beyond the city's fortifications had few defenses.

Isaac "has reinforced for us once again just how vulnerable these critical areas are," said Louisiana Sen. Mary Landrieu. "We must re-engage the Corps of Engineers on this."

More than 900,000 homes and businesses around the state ? about 47 percent of all customers ? were without power Thursday. Utility company Entergy said that included about 157,000 in New Orleans.

New Orleans' biggest problems seemed to be downed power lines, scattered tree limbs and minor flooding.

In Mississippi, several coastal communities struggled with all the extra water, including Pascagoula, where a large portion of the city flooded and water blocked downtown intersections.

High water also prevented more than 800 people from returning to their homes in Bay St. Louis, a small town that lost most of its business district to Katrina's storm surge.

Even though Isaac was weaker, Mayor Les Fillingame said, "every storm is somebody's Katrina, regardless of the intensity."

Complete Guidelines to Health and Fitness: Plastic Surgeons ...

New 'Miracle' Skin Healing Cream Now Available to the Public

The wait is finally over as five of the UK's leading plastic surgeons launch HEAL: a revolutionary new healing gel originally created to soothe and reduce inflammation of the skin following surgery (thereby shortening recovery times), but which has also proven to effectively treat everyday injuries such as sprains, sunburn, bruises and scars, making it the ideal medical product to have in the home for all the family to use. The innovative preparation, now available for purchase online, has been developed by The Firm, a specialist skincare group formed by some of the best-known names in plastic and cosmetic surgery including Peter Butler, Martin Kelly, Patrick Mallucci, Simon Withey and Norman Waterhouse of London Plastic Surgery Associates (LPSA). Together, they combine their specialist knowledge in skin anti-ageing, healing and nanotechnology to bring products to the public that actually work.

Each surgeon at The Firm has specific expertise in skin healing: Peter Butler carried out his experimental research on skin ageing and transplantation in the United States (Harvard). Martin Kelly has an MD in antioxidant skin therapy, Patrick Mallucci wrote a thesis on nanotechnology delivery systems and both Simon Withey and Norman Waterhouse have published widely on skin repair in plastic surgery. With a combined clinical experience of over fifty years in treating skin wounds after surgical procedures, they are well equipped to understand the healing process of the skin. In addition, The Firm drafted top French chemist Colette Haydon to perfect the formula in order to achieve the optimal effect, which offers a triple method of action: anti-inflammatory, bruise-solving and scar maturation.

According to Mr Butler, who leads the UK Facial Transplantation team and whose skincare research is internationally acclaimed;

"HEAL was created because no single product existed that combines all the elements of reducing bruising and inflammation as well as accelerating the healing process. This unique gel combines all of this and is completely different to any other 'off the shelf' products that claim to have healing effects on the skin, as they do not contain enough of the active ingredients needed to have an effect. The difference with HEAL is that the key ingredients are present in the right formulations to ensure they penetrate the skin's surface and actually have a dramatic effect on the end result".

Mr Mallucci added; "Over the last three years with the help and expertise of leading French chemist Colette Haydon we have developed HEAL which has a unique combination of active ingredients Arnica Montana and Madecassoside, for the first time ever packaged in a liposomal system, which delivers the agents to where they are needed most - to the deeper layers of the skin. The nanotechnology is designed to deliver the products of HEAL with maximum efficiency to the damaged area".

HEAL combines a triple method of action which works to soothe the closed wound - using Arnica, Haloxyl and Glistin, to reduce heat sensation and discomfort; repair the damage - using Collaxyl protein fractions to promote cellular repair and optimise scar healing with Silicone. For the past two years The Firm have tested HEAL in their clinical practice, London Plastic Surgery Associates where every year hundreds of patients have undergone facelift, rhinoplasty and breast surgery. The feedback from their patients has been overwhelming, with:

- 94% of patients reporting that HEAL was very soothing to bruised areas
- 82% of patients reporting that HEAL reduced swelling after surgery
- 85% of patients reporting that HEAL highly effectively reduced post-surgery bruising
- 97% of patients would continue to use HEAL in the future and recommend the product to others

Fiona Kent, a 37-year-old Executive Personal Assistant - who had a Rhinoplasty and Chin Augmentation last year - says;

"I was amazed at how soothing and comforting the product felt on my tender skin after my operation and it reduced bruising within days. It smells divine and has a consistency that sinks into the skin. HEAL is truly amazing and is certainly a product that I will always have in the home."

HEAL is available online at http://www.healgel.com and costs ?28 for a 30 ml jar.

Always something worth keeping in mind when conducting any sort of transaction. ?Remember, the other guy doesn?t necessarily have your best interest at heart and he certainly doesn?t want to lose money just to get you to like him.

Short version: think stocks are high? Bonds are high too and are going to get smacked by rising interest rates at some point in the future. ?I offer these charts from last week?s Carnival of Financial Discipline for visual stimulus:

Stocks

Bonds

If you?re young now is the time to assume some risk. ?Don?t go to heavy into an asset that is virtually guaranteed to drop in value between now and your retirement.

Oh c?mon, really dude? Here is where we get to have some fun, if by fun we mean using Google to measure just how unoriginal a topic is:

15,000,000 results (give or take a few). ?Suppose we searched for something a bit more aggressive and effective at achieving financial independence?

3,040 results. ?Or 0.02% of the result list of ?how to budget.? ?Care to guess the ratio of people who budget obsessively compared to those who are millionaires? ?I bet its something similar.

And now we come to the post that pissed me off the most:

Dreck like this is just like the crap the left put forward during the surge in Iraq: no kidding we took more casualties, its because we had more boots on the ground! ?I got back four months ago from an area of Afghanistan that used to be covered by one brigade. ?When I left it was covered by eight. ?Guess which sized force was more effective in developing the security situation? ?Guess which sized force took more casualties?

This is the kind of thing that drives a wedge between the military and the civilian populace it is supposed to protect. ?Either you feel pity for us because you watch talentless twits prance around on TV while we fight a war you?ve forgotten about or you use our deaths to push your own agenda. ?Yes, the military is ultimately controlled by a civilian, as it should be in a free country. ?You might even know some people in the military, or, even worse, be a military spouse. ?Neither of which means you know what the hell you are talking about when it comes to strategic or tactical military operations. ?Hell I?m a (junior) officer and I could give a damn about strategic ops, what makes you think you know how to translate body counts into accurate policy analysis?

Now that I think about it there was a post I saw that also pissed me off. ?I?m in rant mode so bear with me for a few hundred more words:

I found one of those very rare un-decided voters! You know, the people who don?t watch TV, don?t use the internet, don?t read the newspaper, don?t talk to friends about politics, and thus wait until the last week before the election to figure who is running and who they want to vote for.

Or they actually are tuned in and are just so incredibly indecisive that they haven?t made a decision yet. ?Isn?t it good to know there are enough of them to swing a national election one way or the other? Go America!

As it turns out the un-decided voter in question is He Who Has?Diarrhea?Of The Mouth, Trent from from the Simple Dollar. ?I?ll let his own words from his reader mailbag post speak for themselves before I go into my apparently widely known ?jerk/asshole? mode:

Q10: Endorsement for President
Are you prepared to endorse Mitt Romney or Barack Obama for president?

- Alan

For starters, I don?t think the president has a lot to do with what actually happens in America. I think Congress has far more power than the president, to the point that I think one?s local Senate and House campaigns are more important to the future of the country than the presidency.

For another, my feeling is that Obama has not been as good as the Democrats often say, nor has he been as bad as the Republicans often say. At the same time, I have no idea what Mitt Romney stands for other than being ?not Obama,? which isn?t enough for me.

So I have no interest in ?endorsing? either one. I actually haven?t made up my mind fully about who I will even vote for when it comes to the presidential election.

Let me take you back to American Government 101: No branch of government has ?far more power? than the other. ?Public perception notwithstanding checks and balances do tend to work in keeping all three branches in line. ?You know all those bills that Congress signs that waste your money? ?Who do you think signs them into law? ?Yeah, its the guy in the White House. ?Also, and of more direct importance to me, is that the President has the final say in determining where our military gets deployed. ?So yes, please pay more attention to your local two-bit congressional race instead of the race that actually determines where the next generation of Americans will go to fight and die.

Also, and while I?m still refraining from making my own presidential choice known on this blog (the?choice?has been made, that I assure you), how is it possible that a man who makes his living off of the internet has no idea what Mitt Romney stands for? ?Really? ?Kind reader, I can almost guarantee that if I asked you to give me the basic bullet points on POTUS and Romney?s positions on taxes, domestic spending, and Israel that you would be able to give them to me with a high degree of accuracy. ?So if that is true how is it that dear Trent is lost in the sauce? ?Remember he hasn?t just made a decision,?he doesn?t even know what one of the two major candidates stands for.

But if you want to know how to save a couple pennies by making your own toothpaste then Trent is your guy.

Folks, this s**t matters to me because the guy in the White House has a significant impact on where my friends get to spend their summer vacations. ?For others among you presidential elections matter because it directly hits your pocketbook in the form of taxes and the government?s level of intervention in the marketplace. ?The list of reasons why these elections matter is quite long when you consider that more than 100 million people are going to pull the handle in November. ?When you go into the voting booth who you vote for is a decision that rests entirely with you. ? Just do us all a favor and put some mental effort into the decision before you make it. ?Ignorance is not a virtue.

Covering tropical storms - Association of Health Care Journalists

As Tropical Storm Isaac bears down on the Gulf Coast, we have gathered tip sheets about covering natural disasters and the ensuing public health risks, along with articles written by journalists about covering the public health angle of disasters.

The compilation includes award-winning stories about covering health and health care systems in the aftermath of hurricanes ? along with questionnaires about how those stories were reported. Links to resources and academic research should help you find story ideas and expert sources to help you evaluate and cover the public health response before, during and after the storm.

Among the collection:

 • Presentations from a panel about evaluating how prepared your city is for a disaster
 • A presentation about following the money in public health crisis preparation
 • Two articles about how journalists might cover and survive disasters as well as understand the medical systems in place to handle them.
 • Extensive reporting on health care in southern Mississippi and New Orleans in the years after Hurricane Katrina
 • Sheri Fink?s Pulitzer-winning article, ?The Deadly Choices at Memorial,? about what happened at one isolated New Orleans hospital in the chaotic days after Hurricane Katrina, as well as her? article for AHCJ, ?Covering a complex story for the long haul,? in which she explains the reporting and writing process for that work.

Collie - Azure - Medium - Adult - Dog

Note: If you are viewing this pet on Petfinder, the pet may show incorrectly as a mixed breed. This pet is NOT a mixed breed.
Azure is a 2 year old smooth coat collie - beautiful blue merle. She has just been to the vet for some dental work and is now on the road to recovery. She's a little on the 'round' side and will benefit from a healthy diet and plenty of exercise. She bonds quickly with her people, and gets along well with other dogs, though she would probably do best in a home with another male dog to play with. She is silly and loves to goof around; she will need a family that will use positive training to help her learn good doggie manners and not be too mouthy or rough. Azure will also need to continue gentle exposure to the 'outside world' from a patient owner - she is becoming more confident with new sounds and experiences, but still has a way to go. Azure has tons of potential and With a little help and encouragement, she is going to make a great addition to someone's home.

If you are interested in rescuing a collie, please complete this short adoption questionnaire <http://www.savecollies.org/questionnaire.html> . Our standard adoption fee is $350. This fee helps us to cover the expense of providing each dog with a Health Exam, Rabies/DHPP vaccines, Heartworm Test, Heartworm Preventative, Flea & Tick Protection, Microchip, Neuter/Spay, and a Bath.

Thank you for your consideration in adopting a collie in need!!!

Periphery properties: Punjab fails to get ... - Real Estate India

??|?? August 25, 2012 ?? 02:33pm ??|Contributed by manoja

Desperate for a stay on the order passed by the Punjab and Haryana High Court on setting up a Judicial Tribunal to probe the alleged illegal properties owned by high ups, the Punjab government failed to get any immediate relief from the Supreme Court.

A senior lawyer, arguing on behalf of the Punjab government requested a division bench of the Apex Court to stay the operation of the High Court order as the said order has made Punjab?s revenue and civil courts defunct. However, the Bench refused to grant stay or any immediate relief today. Putting queries, the Supreme Court today asked the Punjab government to return with response next week.

The Apex Court pointed out to a deficiency in an affidavit filed by the Punjab government in its special leave petition (SLP). The Bench objected to the affidavit filed by the Financial Commissioner, Revenue. The Bench observed that the affidavit, to support the SLP, should have been by the Principal Secretary to Punjab government.

Counsel for Punjab government requested the Bench to grant stay as an interim relief till the next date of hearing. The Bench however declined the request. In its SLP, the Punjab government has taken the plea that after the High Court?s order of setting up a Judicial Tribunal, its (Punjab) Revenue and Civil Courts have virtually become defunct.

The Punjab government has further stated that the High Court order has adversely affected the transfer of common land in the State. So much so that some of the government projects have also been affected, the State has submitted in its SLP.

The State has further stated that statutory bodies, like the Revenue Commissioners, have stopped entertaining cases and appeals pending before them after the High Court?s order. Punjab has further submitted that the High Court?s order, has put complete stay on registration of sale deeds regarding shamlat deh land.

As an immediate relief, the Punjab government had demanded that the High Court?s order should be stayed immediately so that the Revenue Court and Civil Courts can adjudicate disputes pertaining transfer/ sale and alienation of common land.

On May 30, a division bench of the High Court had set up a Judicial Tribunal today to find out the alleged illegal properties owned by high-ups in the city?s periphery and other parts of Punjab. In an embarrassment to the Punjab government which had been investigating the case for the past five years, the High Court had expanded the scope of investigation from city?s periphery to other districts in Punjab where village/ common land has been grabbed or sold by high-ups/ private persons.

Significantly, the High Court had also included jumla mushtarkan malkhan land other than shamlat / forest/ nazool land which were already under the HC scanner. In 2007 the Court had directed the Punjab government to conduct an investigation and submit a report. Even after conducting the probe and submitting several status reports, the High court had observed, no ?tangible progress? was shown and no ?tangible? action was taken against the culprits.

Kaspersky Lab's New ?Safe Money? Technology Protects Online ...

It?s no secret: most cybercriminals don?t want online fame, they want your money.?Kaspersky Lab?research shows that each day, more than 1,400 new pieces of banking malware are created. These malicious programs are designed specifically to hijack your online purchases, snoop on credit card transactions, and redirect your web browser to fraudulent sites. More than $1.2 trillion will be exchanged over the Internet in 2012, and stealing even a small percentage can mean a big pay-day for cybercriminals.

Today, Kaspersky Lab, a leading developer of secure content and threat management solutions, announced new versions of?Kaspersky Internet Security?and?Kaspersky Anti-Virus. Both products feature our strongest protection ever against modern threats and significant improvements to performance and simplicity, including a faster installation, less drain on computer resources and battery life, and real-time protection against viruses, spyware, and more.

A new offering found in Kaspersky Internet Security is?Safe Money, Kaspersky Lab?s unique technology designed to protect the user?s money when shopping and banking online. To keep your cash safe, Kaspersky Internet Security?s?Safe Money?will:

1. Automatically activate when visiting most common payment services (PayPal, etc.), banking websites, and you can easily add your own bank or shopping websites to the list.

2. Isolate your payment operations in a special web browser to ensure your transactions aren?t monitored.

3. Verify the authenticity of the banking or payment website itself, to ensure the site isn?t compromised by malware, or a fake website designed to look authentic.

4. Evaluate the security status of your computer, and warn about any existing threats that should be addressed prior to making payments.

5. Provide an onscreen Virtual Keyboard when entering your credit card or payment information so you can enter your information with mouse-clicks. This will activate a special program to prevent malware from logging any keystrokes on your physical keyboard.

In July, this new Safe Money technology was evaluated against 15 real-world attack styles used by malware to steal your banking information. Tested by independent research labMatousec,?Kaspersky Internet Security successfully blocked all 15 banking attacks. Most other popular security products failed to block even half of the attacks. The full test results are available?online.

Watching for Security Flaws in Your Apps and Programs

Another new and unique technology added to both Kaspersky Internet Security and Kaspersky Anti-Virus is called?Automatic Exploit Prevention. An easy way for a cybercriminal to gain control of your PC is to take advantage of a security flaw in one of the dozens of programs and applications you use every day. When cybercriminals discover an unpatched security flaw in a popular program ? such as Adobe Acrobat, Java or Microsoft Internet Explorer, for example ??they may race to infect as many victims as they can before the vendor fixes the flaw. Whenever you ignore a pop-up window telling you to download the latest updates for a program, you?re unwittingly keeping this window of vulnerability open even longer. Now, Kaspersky Lab will not only alert you when out-of-date programs are running on your machine, but Automatic Exploit Prevention will protect you from these vulnerabilities until you are able to update them.

Kaspersky Lab?s technology watches over the programs installed on your PC and knows how these programs are supposed to act. If the program tries to perform unusual or unauthorized activities, Automatic Exploit Prevent blocks the abnormal action while still allowing the program to perform its normal operations. This means Kaspersky Internet Security and Kaspersky Anti-Virus will keep you safe without inconveniencing you by shutting off the applications you use every day. It happens more often than you think ? from January through March 2012, Kaspersky Lab detected more than 1 million malicious programs designed to exploit vulnerabilities in commonly-used software.

Kaspersky Lab:?15 Years of Award-Winning Security for Your Computer

In 2012,?Kaspersky Lab celebrated its 15th anniversary?of security research and technological innovation. For years, Kaspersky Lab has steadily refined and improved its cornerstone products ? Kaspersky Anti-Virus for essential protection needed to secure a PC, and Kaspersky Internet Security for advanced protection to confidently browse online. Both products work behind the scenes to deliver the fastest and most trusted virus and spyware protection in the world. Kaspersky Lab?s key improvements to both products, designed to protect customers in 2013 and beyond, include:

 • A new antivirus engine with better detection rates for the entire scope of emerging cyber-threats
 • New anti-phishing technology that features improved detection of imposter websites that try to steal passwords and other valuable data
 • A simplified user interface that provides faster installation and easier day-to-day use of the product
 • Improved performance, to keep you safe without slowing you down
 • More efficient power consumption, to ensure you get the most battery life from your laptop

In addition, both Kaspersky Anti-Virus and Kaspersky Internet Security are?Windows 8 Ready, and will work seamlessly on the new Microsoft operating system. The new versions of Kaspersky Internet Security and Kaspersky Anti-Virus are included in?Kaspersky ONE, a Universal Security product that protects PCs, Macs, smartphones1?and Android tablets using a single activation code. No matter what devices you use to get online, all you need is Kaspersky ONE.

Pricing and Availability

Kaspersky Internet Security and Kaspersky Anti-Virus are available for purchase now on Kaspersky Lab?s?online store, and wherever quality software is sold in the U.S. and Canada. Current customers may upgrade free of charge from Kaspersky Internet Security 2012 and Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2012 to the new products for the remainder of their existing license period. A standard subscription ? 3-user licenses for a 1-year period ? is $79.95 for Kaspersky Internet Security and $59.95 for Kaspersky Anti-Virus.

Libyan diplomats claim refugee status to stay in Canada

Report an error

OTTAWA?-?

Three Canadian agents of deposed Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi claimed refugee status here after they were ordered out of Canada last May, QMI Agency has learned.

Two government sources told QMI Agency the three Libyans who begged to stay in Canada were diplomats working for the Gadhafi regime.

Canada decided to kick Gadhafi's diplomats out of the country in May 2011 during the Libyan civil war that Gadhafi's forces would lose and in which Gadhafi himself was eventually killed.

CBC News also reported on the Libyan diplomats who now want protection in Canada as refugees. CBC News used an Access to Information request to uncover details of the refugee request in quarterly reports produced by the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade that track incidents of foreign diplomats behaving badly in Canada.

Neither QMI Agency nor CBC were able to ascertain the identity or nationality of the three Libyan diplomats hoping to stay in Canada as refugees.

MLB: Texas 10, Minnesota 6

Published: Aug. 24, 2012 at 12:29 AM

ARLINGTON, Texas, Aug. 24 (UPI) -- Mitch Moreland drove in the go-ahead score during a six-run eighth and Josh Hamilton had five RBI Thursday in powering the Texas Rangers past Minnesota 10-6.

The Rangers broke a 4-4 tie with their big inning, which helped them boost their lead in the American League West over Oakland to six games.

Moreland's double brought home the first run of the eighth and Hamilton finished off the inning with a two-run single.

Hamilton also had a two-run double in the first and delivered a sacrifice fly in the fifth. Adrian Beltre contributed a solo shot in the fifth, his fourth home run in the last two games.

Joe Mauer drove in the first run of the contest with a double in the first, touching off a series of events that cost the Twins their starting pitcher and manager.

When Mauer appeared in the third, he was hit by a pitch from Texas starter Roy Oswalt on a 3-0 count.

In the bottom half of the third, Minnesota's Scott Diamond threw a 3-0 pitch over the head of Hamilton and was immediately kicked out of the game. Minnesota manager Ron Gardenhire was also ejected for arguing Diamond's dismissal.

The win went to reliever Mike Adams (2-2), who struck out two in the eighth inning.

Jared Burton (1-1) was on the mound to start the eighth for the Twins and took the loss.

Fed easing hopes lift global shares, weigh on dollar

LONDON (Reuters) - Signals from the U.S. Federal Reserve that another dose of stimulus measures could come "fairly soon" lifted global shares on Thursday and pushed the dollar to a two-month low, outweighing poor economic data from China and Europe.

European shares, which are up over 15 percent since June and have been driving the steady 11.5 percent rise in global stocks, were up 0.16 percent at 0925 GMT. Indexes in London, Frankfurt and Paris were all higher.

U.S. stock futures pointed to a higher open on Wall Street, with futures for the S&P 500, the Dow Jones and the Nasdaq 100 up 0.3 to 0.4 percent.

The euro, which has been boosted in recent weeks by hopes that a new bond buying-led plan being drawn up by the European Central Bank will overcome the currency bloc's debt troubles, was at a seven-week high against the dollar at $1.25726.

Adding to the swirl of speculation about the details of the ECB's plans, central bank sources told Reuters on Thursday that the bank is considering targeting bond yield levels with its purchases, but without making the targets public.

The dollar sank to a two-month low versus a broader basket of currencies. Behind the move was the Federal Reserve's signal on Wednesday that more policy easing is likely to be on the way, a move that will pump more dollars into the financial system.

Minutes from the U.S. central bank's meeting earlier in the month said: "Many (Fed) members judged that additional monetary accommodation would likely be warranted fairly soon unless incoming information pointed to a substantial and sustainable strengthening in the pace of the economic recovery."

"The market seems more interested in more prospects of stimulus from the Fed than worries over the euro crisis. In the short term, the market could get back up to the highs which we've seen in the last few weeks," said Darren Easton, director of trading at London-based Logic Investments.

The Purchasing Managers' Index survey from Markit suggested that the euro zone was destined to return to recession, as the poll notched up a seventh month of contraction.

"In terms of where they are, this is consistent with contraction in euro area GDP," said Jeavon Lolay, Global Economist, Lloyds Banking Group. "You could argue it was slightly better than expected, but there isn't much to add."

Germany confirmed its economy grew at 0.3 percent in the second quarter. Chinese manufacturing PMI data also hit their lowest levels since November as new export orders slumped and the stock of unsold goods rose.

TIME PRESSURE

Meetings between Greece and key euro zone leaders are set to continue, with Greece's prime minister heading to Berlin to see German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Friday and French President Francois Hollande on Saturday.

Eurogroup chief Jean-Claude Juncker kept alive Greek hopes of winning more time, saying that the country was staring at its "last chance". But German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble warned in a radio interview that more time was "not a solution to the problems".

European bond markets were choppy as they headed towards midday. German government bond futures were in demand, up 55 ticks, tracking the move in U.S. bonds.

The bloc's troubled members were under fire, however, with Spanish and Italian borrowing costs both rising, with traders citing selling by domestic investors ahead of fresh auctions next week.

Fed stimulus hopes also helped oil markets shrug off the weak Chinese and European data, with Brent crude prices rising more than a dollar to breach $116 a barrel. Gold and silver hit their highest levels in more than three months.

"The Fed's tone is totally different in the minutes from previous comments, and that helped gold," said Chen Min, an analyst at Jinrui Futures in the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen.
